I need an opinion on this bowl. It is Spalted Pecan with some figure in the darker parts of the wood. It is 9 1/2" X 2". I am debating if I should experiment with ebonizing this one with the rust and cider vinegar recipe. also any hard critique is welcome.

Christopher....that's a difficult decision.....I like the wood and form as it is......? Sorry I'm not much help.

Doubt you've enough tannin in the pecan to make a good ebonization with the ferrous acetate. That's useful for woods with a lot of tannins like oak. If you want to play, try one of the other methods like RIT dye or India ink. They're pretty good, but expect them to work on the earlywood only. Latewood's going to be too dense.

Christopher sorry I wouldn't touch it. I like it as is.

Agreed. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Purdy piece.

Ultimately, of course, it is your decision. Personally, I like it like it is. I think if I was going to "color" it I would go with a red dye perhaps.

Another vote for the natural look Chris, Great job on some great wood.

Nice bowl there ... I kinda like the bowl as is. Walnut is the wood to do ebonizing on! You can get a jet black finish from walnut, but it varies with other woods. I like the faded mix of colors in this one!

Thanks everyone, I'll leave this one alone and do the ebonizing on another wood another day.:)

Yeah...I'm glad you're going to leave it alone. That wood doesn't need a thing to speak loudly.;)

Hi Chris,

I like the form and shape but, honestly I'm not a fan of pecan on turned pieces. I think it's mostly to do with the open grain patterns. But, you turn what ye can get!:D
