What are the differences using a ros as opposed to a 1/4 palm sander?

A ROS can be much more aggressive in removing material without at the same time creating such nasty orbits in the wood that a orbital palm sander may do. Any power sander doesn't eliminate the necessity of hand sanding as the final step.
