Good day

I just came back from Japan and I would like to share with you a few pictures.

Before you ask, no, I did not buy any Japanese hand tools because my hand skills are…not so good

I was taken to a restaurant near Narita airport and to my surprise the owner was woodworker.

The restaurant is combined with the shop and he is making and selling tabletops made of one piece of wood and other things.

If you like to see more pictures of his work click on this web site

If you think that your shop is dusty and messy, that's nothing comparing to this guy

The TS. If you don't see the guard and riving knife it's because there are non...actually he moved the blade from the normal center location to the edge (you can see a cover between the miter slots), he made a slider on the other side but because of the mess you cannot see it (a chipboard and stick are sitting on the slider).

Beautiful stuff!! Looks like you had a wonderful trip.

And that planer looks perfect for slab work....not unlike the poor-man's version of a router suspended on a board across two known level and coplaner guides. (Or the adaptation of a Lucas mill with a router)

Fantastic pictorial story Nissim. It looks like you had a wonderful trip. The guys shop, his equipment, and what he produces is perhaps one of the best expressions I've seen of," It's not the equipment, it's the craftsman."

Thanks for posting the tour.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. The guy may have a mess but he does beautiful work.

I would love to have a truck load of that wood.

Thank you all for the kind replies

I lived in Japan for 11 years but it was the first time for me to see such a workshop and woodworker.
I was shocked from what I've seen there and just took the camera and started to "click".

I'll be in Japan again in May and I hope to see some other shops (of course I'll take pictures).

Thanks again
niki

Nice pictures Nissim. It looks like you had a fabulous trip.

That guys shop may be dusty, but he's good, really good. Maybe the dust balances out the chi in his shop.;)

My son is stationed in Japan. I sent this to him, maybe he can check it out. He has a new Harley and likes to take road trips.

Thanks for the pictures. Reminds me of my trips to Japan a number of years ago. No woodworking involved, just chemical plants and temples.

Thank you all for your kind replies

The prices of the slabs are "Japanese prices"...$1000~$3000 but in a country that ONE tomato costs $1, it should not be a surprise.

Please click on this link, it's a road map of his location. It can help your son to get there
