A friend wants to build this lathe HOME MADE BOWL LATHE (http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/SkillsAndTechniques/SkillsAndTechniquesArticle.aspx?id=26160) He's looking for a headstock that has he can attach a motor to similar to the one in my link He's also looking for something about 1 1/4" threaded with a #3 MT he wants to make 36" + turnings. He's checked E Bay & Craigs list so far no good? Thanks

#3 MT is almost an inch, you may need bigger than 1¼" spindle.

I'm not sure of the thread size but I do know he wants to use a #3 MT

I am looking at building something similar as well. You will need at least a
1 1/2" spindle if you want to do a #3 taper. A #3 taper is 1" at the opening of the taper, for large turnings you are going to want the extra steel around the insert. Why such a large taper by the way?

Chuck check this thread too

Maybe your friend have MT3 accessories that he wants to keep? Note that if that is the case...he might have difficulty finding other accs later. Though he can use an MT3 to MT2 reducer I guess.

I agree that if he must have an MT3...the 1-1/4" spindle size won't work.

Tyler,
I don't know why he wants a MT3 but he does I do know he wants it to be threaded for at least a 1 1/14"

Dario,
Thanks for thye link I'll go look at it.

He can pretty much only have either or, not both. The thickness required for the shaft simply would not be strong enough to support the load, especially if he is wanting to turn large blanks that are out of balance.
