There once was a tool available from one of the mail-order houses that was essentially a very lonk-shanked dovetail bit with just a little flare at the tip ?? ?? ?? Supposedly, the bit would be used to slightly widen the deep end of a mortis .. .. then, the tenon would have a slot with a wedge inserted into it, and when driven home, you had both a lot of glue surface and a strong mechanical joint.
