I am blessed with a father and grandfather that were carpenters and loved good saws and kept them in good shape, lots of them but...... All of us used WD40 to protect them thru the years and now with more use I need a solvent that will clean them up. I have no rust but some shellac type coating that doen't help- their actual use. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Harry

Maybe try a little acetone, won't dammage the steel but will leave it vulnerable so finish with wax or other metal protective coating.

Any of the above, or mineral spirits, then paste wax (no silicone) for protection.
