Here are two pieces that I did this weekend and finally got the bowl buffed today. No buffing for the plate since it is intended as a utility piece. The plate is about 11" diameter and bowl is about 8x3, both are maple.
This little bowl tried its best to make it to the burn pile but I finally spun it into submission. It tried to liberate itself from its glue block, and tried to chatter its way to pieces.

Nice job on both pieces. Is that what they mean when they say birdseye maple?

Kevin, have to say that I like both pieces!

The plate has great natural maple color and some really nice grain patterns running through it.

The bowl is a real beauty! Wild grain - looks like burl - fabulous dark color! Great form and finish!

You did good!

Beautiful work... that bowl is a beautiful piece of wood! Really nice looking. Is the platter a piece of crotchwood?? It all looks super!

That's a cool piece! Beautiful wood, burl curl it has it all.

Rich, no while burl usually has eyes like that, birdseye maple is usually distinct little eyes in the wood... more subtle than that. Here is an example:

Both pieces are beautiful but that bowl has so much going on in the figure that it's holding conversations with itself! Well done!

Thanks for all the nice comments guys.
I found that piece of burl that I had misplaced (forgot I had) among the clutter, and was not sure what to do with it when I found it. I was going to do a thin hollow form but my last attempt with a similar sized piece didn't turn out so great so I figured a little bowl was in order.
The plate is a crotch piece, I almost hate to admit they were both auction pieces from the big E which I won long ago and just got around to turning them.

A couple of great looking pieces. The figure in that bowl is amazing and I really like the feathering in the platter.
Keep up the good work.

Looks like you could have bought that in a store! :D ;) :D :p :D

Just kidding. I think your work here is wonderful - more fine work that I hope to do as well as one day in the future, if you know what I mean.
