Guide me on how to make a large wooden fork

I'm wanting to build (carve) a large wooden fork for my mother. Not to be used for salads, but rather as a gift, a joke, and as a token of appreciate. I know, it's weird, but a joke around my house growing up was always "Do you want to die with a fork in your head?" :) My mom is an amazing chef, so I think it is appropriate.

Any who, what would be the best way to start going about this. I'm not in a big hurry, and I want it to be done well. It is something I'd like to mount to a backboard so it can be put on a wall somewhere.
