Anyone have a good supplier of 1/32" clear acrylic? Prefer the old standard 12"x24" sheets, but will take any tips!!!

Rowmark does not advertise it, but they will sell clear extruded acrylic in the following thicknesses:

.010 .021 .030 .050 .055 .078 .090 .115 .117

They really do make both .115 and .117. Normally they use these materials to make their other products (coat/laminate) and so it needs to be processed as a special order. I was also told I would have to order through a distributor, not from Rowmark itself.

They also have white in some gages but I did not get a list.

contact Jen Schoenberger - Sales & Marketing at Rowmark

I assume .030 would work for you. Probably available in standard engraving sheet sizes as you want. I don't know what the pricing is like. I think Rowmark should put these products in their brochure as more people might be interested.

I once did a job for a customer that brought in his own .01 acrylic. He told me he paid $200 for a 2'x4' piece (didn't say where). When it gets that thin be careful, it's extremely easy to break.

I found it at Hobby Lobby... they get like $2 for a 16"x20" so I think I will be ok... a local sign shop wants it cut into 1"x12"to18" for use in menu boards... they are having trouble getting the stuff to cut clean enough and exact enough to slide in and out of the menu board slides. All they want me to do are the cuts... they apply the vinyl to the strip so the light shows through the letter/number cut outs...

Do I understand they have .1/32 acrylic in 16" x 20" for $2? Seems too low. Are you sure it is acrylic and not styrene?

Well... now that you mention it I guess it was pretty cheap... the shelf label said it was "Plexiglass", but who knows that what they call "Plexiglass" is not really something else... Anyone know of a test to be able to tell for sure??? I got a sheet of it to have on hand, so I can experiment some...

Brent,

Take a scrap piece of the unknown material and roast the edge with a lighter (please do this outside! ). Compare it to the smell of burnt scrap piece of Rowmark material. (just don't inhale  ).

Styrene and acrylic will have drastically different smells. As a matter of fact, the styrene will probably start burning! Watch your fingers!

In a previous life,I was in plastic injection molding for 25 years. This is actually a standard test to assist in identifying unknown plastics.

Well that is the test Jim... Smeels like a styrofoam cup thrown in the campfire... crud now I really need to find a supplier... I have purchased some Rowmark from JDS before... I wonder if they would work with me to get the 1/32 acrylic??? or are they to big to help a small guy???

Brent,

We just ordered three sheets of 1/16" acrylic sheet from our local supplier in Norfolk Virginia to make ADA text for door signs. I asked about 1/32" thick sheet and it is available in the AcryLite brand.

Brent, check your yellow pages for plastics distributors - there should be one in pretty much any medium sized city, and they will either have it or get it for you. They may want to sell you a whole sheet, but I would have to think $40ish. They will also usuallycut it for free if you get to a salesman, rather han just doing a walkup. My local place charges $20 for shipping.
