I picked up a couple of planes from the bay. These are the before pictures. The after will have to wait...until after I've got em done.

Stanley 5 1/2C, and a 604.

A bit rough, I know. Going to fix up the totes and knobs. Spruce up the rest. Stay tuned....

Ken,

the rusty ones make the best before pics. I am really looking forward to
seeing the after pics, also any in between pics would be nice too. :D

Handles have had new beavertails attached and partially shaped. More sanding tomorrow. Red paint came off the 604 with lacquer thinner and a few old toothbrushes.

And what tool did you use for the shaping, I need to do the samething on a few planes.

I like using old type planes but I have typically started using LN or modified Hoch replacement blades.

Bandsaw, then belt sander, then rasp, then sandpaper.

For glue, I've used epoxy, yellow, gorilla and thick CA. Not sure I have a preference yet.

Will finish with rubbed on shellac.

Thanks,
Ken

Here it is, done for now. I may put a thicker blade and new chipbreaker in, but for now, here's how it looks.

PS it IS a gloat now.

Nice job Ken!

I got bit by the plane restoration bug a while back and have done about 30 of them so far. I enjoy doing the super rusty ones the best. I really need to start listing them on Ebay but I'm having trouble parting with any of them. :D :D :D

I agree Nic, it really is addictive...

I'm Ken and I'm a planeaholic.
