I am repairing an oldish (1930s) chair. What, if any solvent, would remove the glue best.

If the chair is indeed 1930s, the glue used was hide glue since none of the poly or synthetic glues of today existed back then. It is also unlikely that a resorcinol was used on a piece of furniture. Simple hot water is your solvent.
