I know this sounds too easy but on mine your really have to push the switch hard to get it to snap in to position. You are switching it when the planer is turned on right?

You need to clean out the saw dust. On my planer the dust gets between the gears and won't allow the switch to stay in the 90 CPI setting. No problem with the 60 CPI position.

You have to remove the side panel to get to the gears.

I just tore mine apart completely due to the same problem and after putting it back together, problem gone. That area of the planer is not completely sealed and my dust collection is poor so dust accumulates there. The mechanism there is pretty simple, and appears strong so it is most likely dust. One benefit of dust collection that I dont hear mentioned often is the longevity of your machines' motors and other components. Dust collection is my next priority, and after reading some of the threads on it lately I see it should have been one of my first.
