Another smaller HF I've had roughed for a few weeks and finally got around to finishing. 5 3/4" tall by 4" diameter. The pinhead in me has to say that it has a buffed Seal-a-cell finish.:p

Another yummy one, Travis! Beautiful stuff, those "down under" burls!! Especially in the hands of a master like yourself. I like everything about this piece...except the fact that it's not in my collection. Oh, well...I suppose I'll have to go on living...:p

Beautiful work Travis! Your HF looks like it is made out of glass! Great form - another one of your creations saved to my favorites file!
Hope your Mom is doing better.

Travis you always amaze me with how well you are able to orient each piece of wood to get the best use of all the features in it. That's really a beauty.

Exquisite piece, Travis. Perfect form and you got the most out of a beautiful piece of wood. Great photo, too. These highly reflective pieces are certainly a challenge.
Is Coolibah anything like Mallee to turn (i.e. dense as concrete)?
Travis Stinson

It was pretty doggone dense Neal. Try a Manzanita root burl sometime, I think even concrete would be a pleasure to turn compared to that!

Naw Travis try Black Locust when it is dry.  Concrete is a pleasure.
By the way Travis beautiful HF. I really like the form and the wood. Nice job.

Absolutely gorgeous! I'm a newbie but I'd love to try something in a hollow form. Any chance you have a pic of the piece of wood that you started with? I really like the natural edge not to mention the wood itself. I'd like to know what to look for in a piece of wood to attempt a turning so beautiful. Also, a fantastic finsh I might add.:D

Gorgeous piece, Travis. I like the top very much.
Do you dry these burls differently from conventional woods?

Thanks everyone. Joe, it was still fairly wet, so it got the usual DNA treatment.

Travis that is amazing! That's about it. I can't think of enough nice woods that it deserves. I am glad the pinhead poked through as I am always watching the kind of finish you guys are using.
One question what kind of hollowing rig do you use? I was thinking on getting the monster.

Bob, I used my home made hollowing rig for my mini lathe on this one.

Travis, I've been meaning to ask you about this. It really sparks my curiosity that you wanted to do this with your Mini when you have a PM3520 as a "primary" lathe. Is there something about hollowing on the 3520 that is unsatisfactory that led you to make a rig for your Mini? (Or did you just need the extra option?)
Travis Stinson
02-01-2007, 6:03 PM
Nope Mark, nothing unsatisfactory with the 3520. I made the mini rig "just because"......plus it's lots of fun. ;)
