Small (5" diameter) Box Elder Burl Natural Edge bowl. This wood had a lot going on in it. Lots of colors and some wierd spalting. Wish I had a piece about 16" diameter.

That is a beauty Curt. The wood sure is doing some talking. Nice figure. That would be a piece of beauty at 16". Nice job.

Hey...that's nice lookin' Curt! Get so used to seeing Flame in BE that, I never thought about the burls and curls. Box Elder is a Maple right? Wonder what I can find around here.

Curt, that's gorgeous! I'm glad you made the walls the thickness you made them, it shows off more of that beautiful edge!

Box Elder is Acer negundo and I think the Acer makes it a maple. It's one of the few native trees here in Utah and grows about everywhere. But for some reason the trees that grow near a stream or river grow the burls. If you get more that a hundred feet or so from the water you rarely see a burl on one. And another wierd thing is that I've never seen the slightest hint of the flame in any of the Box Elder I've cut around here.

Beautiful Curt, very pretty wood. Some guy named John has a bunch of new wood, probably burning up some nice big chunks!
