Just got these buffed last night and the are going to the customer in a couple hours They ordered these about 2 weeks ago. They are as much of a matched set as I can make.

They are made from cocobolo and curly maple. 12" one salt and one pepper. Both mechenism are from chef specialties.

Thanks for looking any critics?

I like them both. The recipient is sure to be pleased. I really like all the contrast!!

So...how does the user know which is which? Not trying to be a goof ball, but I've been thinking about this a lot lately on how to differentiate between two matching pieces, through design, without having to burn a giant "P" on one of them.

Bob - beautifull work! No doubt these are a matched set! I also like the contrasting woods - seriously nice work!

John - as for your question on identification - what about switching the order of the wood on the top portion so that pepper has dark wood on top, salt has lighter. Would that work?

John,
The little metal knob has either a P or an S on it. I thought about making them slightly different but the customer wanted them the same. I have made quite a few pepper mills but this was my first salt mill. I had lots of other people ask if I had any or could make them at Chirstmas time so I think It will be something I have more of in the future but was thinking on making them 10" salt and the pepper a 12" that way they are easy to tell apart.

Really nice, Bob!

I love the contrast of the Cocobola and Maple. Did you have any problem with finishing them? I've always found Cocobola difficult.

Neal,
I whipe them down good with naptha while on the lathe then put a sealer coat of shellac on and burnish it in. Then take them off and use 4 coats of spray lacqer wait a few days and beall with white diamonds and wax.

I just had a set ordered today from someone else out of grandillo and birdseye maple. I have the 12" peppermill done and he wants a- as I suggested a 10" salt mill to match but so they are easy to tell apart. It'll be another nice chunk of change. I will be able to buy my hollowing rig soon!!

I will post those when done also.

Thnaks,
Bob
