I've been reading on here about nightmares of things warping by only laminating one side and not both. But I'm thinking about making countertops here, and if I laminate the top, do I also have to laminate the underside? Standard countertops aren't laminated on both sides, are they?

Standard counters are typically not laminated on the bottom because they are tied to the cabinets, and the cabinets keep them from warping. However, laminate doors are often of balanced construction, becasue there's nothing which prevents them from warping.

You can buy cheap backer laminate which is the core stuff without any color. We used this for laminated office furniture which certainly would warp.

not to hijack the thread, but where do you get the cheap backer laminate? I've only seen / looked at the borg. I bought a damaged piece for 10% off, but it still seemed pricey to me.
