View Full Version : A Couple of My Recently Completed Boxes (pics)

Thought I'd post some images of a couple of my recently completed boxes.

The legs on the first box are curly maple, as are the drawer fronts. The carcass is curly cherry, although the cherry looks (for now) very similar to the maple. The cherry will darken with time and make itself discernable from the maple. The drawer handles are jatoba.

The second box represents my first attempt at placing doors on a box. The door panels are bookmatched koa, the carcass is curly maple and the legs and drawer fronts are jatoba. This was also my first attempt at wooden hinges - they are made of lacewood. I have a book that outlines the making of a number of different wooden hinges, and I am pleased with how these turned out.

Like with all my projects, there are several mistakes present, but I have tried to conceal them as well as possible.

Thanks for looking.

Glen, awesome work. Can you share the approximate size of each? It's hard to tell. Are these table top pieces or floor standing?..joe

Thanks Joe. Both pieces have similar dimensions. The carcasses are approx. 11" tall x 7" wide x 6" deep. With legs, they are 24" tall x 9" wide. These are table top pieces.

These pieces are boxes in the same way that a Maserati is a way to get groceries back to your house. Nice work!

Nice work.

There is no such thing as a mistake, rather they are opportunities for innovation!

both are beautiful!

I especially like the doors on the second one. not having styles to break up the bookmatch is stunning.

Very nice. They both, especially the second, have an animal like quality. They look ready to walk or bound away.

Glen,
Those are AMAZING!! Design, style and execution!! Some "out of the ordinary" boxes are clever in design but not appealiing to the eye. YOURS ARE VERY APPEALING TO THE EYE!!!!

Awesome work. Great pics too. What are you using to get the border around the image?

Doug - I have a macro set up in Photoshop that takes me through the same image enhancements each time - step by step - and the final step is creatng that border.

Beautiful work. Are your legs attached with loose tennons? I like how you hinged the doors on the second box. Very nice! That had to make for some interesting assembley!

Glen those are some outstanding projects you built. My wife and I are just looking at them and are blown away by your craftsmanship (I am new and we're going through some of the pages). The pictures make them look great, but probably don't do them their just. I am sure they look even better in person. Thanks for sharing them on the site! Very inspiring to us :) rookies!

I know this post is a year old....but...

WOW!!! Nice creations!

By the way, what book on wooden hinges do you have? I'd like to get into making some of those myself.
