Well, I did find nearly 27 other things I had to do Saturday, or they found me. Here's the background on this project:
http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=50115
And here's the result today. An awl kit from craft suppies you can find here: http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/cgi-bin/shopper?preadd=action&key=050-1035
Turned out of zircoat, a scrap I had laying around just waiting for this project. About 2" x 8". Polished to 3200 and then just waxed with Renaissance wax.
Please excuse the hard shadows and highlight in the pic, I didn't have the light tent set up.

Wow. That turned out really nice Gary! Well worth the effort. Question: Does anyone use awls anymore?

Great Job Gary!

As they say about inheritance, "One day this Awl will be yours"

Aww, John, I awl-ways use an awl. It would be awl-ful if I didn't have one.

Thanks for the kind words.
As a matter of fact, I do use one, usually to start screws, although that would be a brad awl rather than a scratch awl. I also frequently use a four-in-hand, jack plane, and (gasp) a hand saw! I can make more $ doing small repair jobs around my townhouse complex (200 units) than I can acting or working a J.O.B. as middle management whipping boy. The commute and the tax bite are real nice, too! It's just faster and easier to use hand tools than to try to lug a whole shop full of motors around.

Gary that is a beauty. I need to make one for a screw starter. Nice job.

That's almost too pretty to use. I'd be tempted to make it a display piece out of fear that my dirty hands would one day screw it awl up.

I like that. Good work. Maybe after I learn enough I'll give that a try.

You mean there are people that don't?

umm....well...uh...yep.

But then ya know...I have been known to mark a center with a nail. That's pretty close.:o
