I'm going to post this because i like the wood so much. Piece of wood i got from ebay. My wife seems to like it pretty much and i love the black lines. Real punky wood. Soft. Hard to keep it together. Danish oil and waterlox. About 4X4 inches.

Looks sorta like some maple I found a couple years ago. I love the contrasts. Nice job on it Rich!

Looks Great Rich!
I am afraid to start buying wood on Ebay for fear it won't stop.

Looks like the characteristic yellow birch, doesn't it? Maple doesn't normally get all the intermediate colors like birch does.
Rich, if you'd like a real thrill, cut it wet. The punky spots peck out if you look at them half-crosseyed. Since they accept finish so much differently than the less punky, might want to try a bit of a stiffener by putting some Elmers' white 50/50 on it.
What I hate is having to sand so carefully to keep from diving into the soft places. Double the effort.
Since birchbark is waterproofed, it spalts fast in the log.
