my brother's recent project.

Since I haven't any photos of the latest stuff out of my shop, I figured I'd show cabinet my brother has been working on for his new spindle sander.

The cabinet is mostly 3/4" plywood. The doors are pine rails and stiles with, get this, raised panels of 1/4" masonite. There's a door on the left end that will have some shelves added to hold sander accessories. the right half will be used for router, router bit and probably some general storage. There are five casters under it with the fifth one being centered under the vertical divider.

The top is solid slate which he weighed at 96 lbs. The sander is 90 lbs and in the third image, the cabinet is entirely empty. He said there was no threat of the cabinet tipping over.

Not bad for a machinist. :D

Too bad there aren't any photos of the cabinet to the right in the pictures. You can only see the corner in them. There are 4 4'x8' doors. Lots of storage space there.

That is very nice. I really like that idea and have a large (4X6X4") piece of marble that is stained from a printing shop that I could use for a top. Thanks for the idea.

That's not a work station.
It's a piece of furniture.
Sure would look good in my shop.

Very nice cabinet Dave. I too thought it was a piece for the house. How did your brother make the raised panel doors out of 1/4" masonite? That is interesting. Regards, Bill

Thank you for the compliments fellows. I'll have to get details from him on the raised panels from Masonite.

Pretty nice looking cabinet, just wondering why every machinist I know of paints everything gray though...:D

Al, I think it has something to do with getting free paint from their employers. ;)

That is really a nice bench there and the pull out is a nice addition too.

I just got off the phone with my brother. Here's what he told me.

The gray paint is due to the fact that the corner posts are the legs from the original table. They were already painted gray and in rather tough shape. He said he also had most of a gallon of gray paint from a previous project (I expect his drillpress restoration) so he decided to use it.

The raised panels are a sinlge layer of 1/4" masonite. He used it in the drawer for the bottom and while he was setting up his router table for the raised panel, thought he'd try it to see what happened. He ended up with a hair less than 1/8" left so he cut the grooves in the rails and stiles with a single pass on the tablesaw. He said he used some sealer/primer for MDF on it before painting.

Here's his first SU drawing.

Dave,
Please tell your brother that is an impressive first-off in SU!

The cabinet’s pretty nice too… but heck, even woodworkers can make cabinets.;) :D

I would say excellent for a machinist!
