Progress is very slow but steady on my dresser. I started out last spring with a desire to get into woodworking, with only one problem. The only power tool I owned was a Dremel. Over the summer I slowly acquired a planer, router, tablesaw, mortising machine, etc. I spent many hours reading books, visiting Sawmill Creek, and learning from trial and error
out in the garage. Pictured below on the left is the bubinga top and one of the side panels is on the right. For the finish I started with dewaxed shellac, followed by acrylic polyurethane. Sanded to 600 then buffed out with 0000 steel wool.

John, What absolutely gorgeous wood! And it looks like you've learned your lessons well - that joinery into the leg is perfect--at least what I can see in the picture. That dresser will be a showpiece when it's done.

Beautiful work!

Looking good John! That bubinga looks like it has some curl in it!

John,
I hate to say this but...I think you've gone in the wrong direction with this piece. This is such a spectacular disaster that you should immediately send everything to me (just kidding) :D :D :D :D

Wait, I think I got it wrong... I really meant to say it looks so spectacular. I look forward to seeing the finished piece.

Well done,
Dick

Thanks Nancy. I don't even want to know how many hours it took to get it right. But, I enjoy every minute of it. My next project will go a lot quicker after all the lessons I've learned.

Hi John, looks like it will be a very nice piece when its finished, and double thumbs up for the limited experience you have.

The Bubinga is beautiful and contrasts nicely with the maple.

Its a little hard to tell from the pics, but are those bubinga panels solid, or veneered?

The dresser top on the left is solid bubinga. The side rails are also solid, but the panel is bubinga plywood. I found it at a place in British Columbia that sells specialty plywood.
