Went to Berea Hardwoods to look for some decent blanks with low moisture so I could make something for the SMC Holiday Turning Contest/Auction. Found a couple things, but nothing that really tripped my trigger. Larry suggested that I take a piece of a kiln-dried curly cherry board (2" thick). I reluctantly agreed and gave it a whirl. This is 9" diameter and 1.5" High. 1/8" wall but the bottom is 3/16". Sanded through 1200 and finished with a shellac/walnut oil seal then lacquered, steel wooled, then hand rubbed with a soft cloth. If y'all think it's worthy of the auction, I'll put it up there. Otherwise, I'm gonna hafta figure out something else. Thanks much!!:)

John, that's beautiful. And bravo on getting the figure centered on the piece...difficult to do most of the time with stuff like this. Looks worthy to me!!

Beautiful bowl, John. Elegant shape, great finish, wonderful curl in that cherry. I have an 8/4 piece of curly cherry I've been saving for the next little table I make. You got me thinking differently now tho...

Oh, and definitely worthy.

That's a beauty John. It's a nice piece of wood but what really makes it nice is the form you made. I like it.

John! Man, that's just beautiful! Love the form but the curly cherry is just amazing! I guess curly comes in all flavors but this is the first time I have ever seen curly cherry! Love it!

As far as the contest - you have to enter this as it will surely raise some major money! Beautiful work!

John! Man, that's just beautiful! Love the form but the curly cherry is just amazing! I guess curly comes in all flavors but this is the first time I have ever seen curly cherry!

Look for the leaners. It's less a curly than a compression figure with cherry. Not like soft maple. Other thing, as you can see, is you want the closest to quarter grain you can get for best show. When it's not true curl, it doesn't show well at all on face.

Almost forgot. Lovely bowl. I like the fast-spread designs, but they don't hold as much soup, so you can't make 'em all that way.

I was thinking it would make a great fruit bowl, but then all that nice figure would get covered up! That one deserves to live in a display stand. Very nice form.
I encountered some of that curly cherry while doing flat work a few years back, now I'm looking forward to finding some more!
