Hi

Thought I would share an image of a recently completed bandsawn box. The client provided the block of Ebony and had a part in the design process. The box is 12cm square (approx.), it is finished in a blend of oils, the base oil is Tung.

The client will complete the fine finishing - up to 2000 wet and dry. She is very happy with the work.

Really nice. Love the strip of light grain on the dark wood.

Tony,

A very beautiful piece.:)

I've done a number of oil finishes, but never over 600, rarely past 400. Is there a noticeable difference in sheen or feel going to 2000?

Hi

Each surface hand sanded up to 800 wet n dry. I imagine that if the 2000 wet n dry is done properly, then the result will be a glass sheen. I am promised an image when the sanding has been completed, I will post it if and then.

Even at the 800 wet n dry application there is a certain warmth in the timber when handled, it is well worth the effort.

Very nice Tony. The work is excellent.
How deep in does the drawer extend?

PS.You live in an extraodinarily beautiful area of the world. I spent a week in the Blue Mountains area with my wife. incredible, simply incredible.

That's a really beautiful piece...the ebony was perfect for the form, too. Nice work!

thank you for the kind words.

The depth of the drawer is about 8cm, to try and make it any deeper would mean a rounded the back section making it difficulty to glue (Ebony end grain gluing is difficult) and incomplete match between both sections.

Yes, I am pleased to report I live in one part of God's Country. It is however at this time hot - 40 ~ 45 c. predicted for Sunday 21st January, with an extreme bush fire risk warning.

Very nice box. I always like the inclusion of sap wood in projects like this.

What a beautiful box. You just cannot find something that unique on the shelf at any store. Nice work.

great design and execution.

I like this much more than the more run of the mill common bandsaw boxes !

I'm reluctant to ask how much a hunk of ebony that size would cost. Here is have seen bit being sold for $60US a pound !!!

Very beautiful. Must have been a nerve wracking experience, band-sawing an awkward shape in a customer's piece of expensive wood.

Nerve wrecking is a good description particularly as the client was in the workshop at the time.

The block came from EBay, it cost $50 AUD landed in Australia - is that a good price?

That is gorgeous...I also like the inclusion of sapwood, wouldn't be nearly as striking without it.

That is really great Tony! Like others have said, the bark inclusion gives it a very intersting look.

Yikes! Having the client hanging over your shoulder...did you get to charge extra for giving them a tutorial? :D

very cool, I always like it when someone comes up with a fresh idea like this it gets the mind crankin on design ideas for different projects. I like the sapwood too it draws the eye but not too much.
