Good evening all

Except for the pictures I posted the other day, I haven't posted any in months, so I thought I would past a shot of the biggest bowl I had in the show last week. It did not sell in the show, although many people lusted after it. It did sell a few days later to my daughter's orthodontist. If only I could sell him about 20 more I could break even! One thing though about bowls. I have found that the best sellers are in the 9"-12" range, and I think that having a few larger ones help drive the sales of the medium ones. It's like when I used to sell pens. If I had a bunch of $50.00 pens or sets, I always made sure I had several that cost a bunch more. I didn't have the expectation of selling them, but occasionally I will, and people like to buy in the midrange. But anyway, here it is.

This is, for me, a very unusual piece of walnut. I have seem some very highly figured stuff in my time, but never with such pronounced stripes in the grain. This log came from a friend and fellow Wood Centralian Bob Berner, who dumped it off in my yard one day. This bowl is approximately 14" in diameter and 5" high. It is finished with Watco Danish Oil and buffed with a Beall wheel.

Thanks for looking.

Bill, that is a Wonderful Bowl, and that has to be, without a doubt, the most BEAUTIFUL piece of Walnut I have ever seen. WOW, that grain stripe thing that is going is simply unbelievable! As usual Bill, just wonderful work from you, and there are not many that could have done justice to that Walnut like you did. I am always inspired when I see your work...............thanks so much for sharing this bowl with us.........there really are not words to describe the beauty of it. Talkin' about breathtaking.......................this is IT! :D WOWZA! ;)

to be an inspiration! Looking at what you and some others did at Badger Pond is what got me started into wood turning in the first place. Now all of the Creekers here continue to give advice, tips, criticism and pats on the back to keep it going. I, for one, have missed your posts and look forward to seeing more soon. Thanks for posting.

Beautiful bowl, Bill. You positioned that hunk of wood "just right" to get great symetry in the grain pattern which actually accentuates it nicely as a design element.

Your point about having a few larger items to drive sales on the mid-range turnings makes absolute sense to me. Folks really want the "big one" and it excites them into making a purchase for something similar but more in line with their budget. Every time they look at their purchase they will be thinking ahead to when they can buy the one that originally caught their eye...a business card with every purchase/sale makes that call back quick and easy! :D

Hi Bill,

I agree that it your skill and positioning that brought out the wonder in that piece. That is a wonderful bowl.

Bill that is just beautiful. Did you have any idea that it would turn out that way before you started turning it?

OUTSTANDING WORK!
The grain is just awesome. Maybe one day I will be blessed with such talent. Thanks for sharing it.

Mighty fine looking, there, Bill. I'm glad to have met folks like you who feel as I do that the beauty is in the wood, not necessarily the shape we impart to it. Although, sometimes, it is a challenge for us to find that beauty and best display it. Glad to hear your show went well!!

(Looking forward to the end of July already!!!)

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I can't take credit for the wood, I just found it that way, and exploited it. ;) This piece was fairly easy to orient, as the tree had a very regular shape. I have a couple more logs of it in the yard, so now I am hoping to see the same grain in all.

That is the most amazing piece of walnut I have ever seen Bill. You did it justice with that beautiful bowl.

I don't care for walnut that much but I like that one.

...And once again, you've proven why you're considered the bowl master 'round these parts! Simply wonderful.
