This chunk of Pecan sat on a rack behind my shop for about a year. 10" diameter by 2" deep with double rim, buffed gel poly finish.

Must be Bowl Week. Good thing...I'm working on one too. Nice lookin' piece Travis.

I have a question...Do you intend for this bowl to be used for anything, or do you consider it strictly as a "looker"?

John, since my wife has it sitting on the coffee table, I guess it's a "looker". ;)

Travis, It was definitely worth the time it took to let the spalting occur. Great lookin' piece of pecan and of course great form!

Travis you ever going to make anything nice? that looks like something someone with years lathe experience could of done it. Oh Wait:eek: that must mean it 's nice.

Very nice I like it alot. I always show my wife your posts. Your hf are one of the reasons I started turning.

Very nice piece of art Travis! Your finish lets the spalting do all the talking. Very nice.

Very nice! Pecan is nice to work with and you've done it proud.

Neal just brought another question to my pointed little head....Isn't Pecan just as rock-hard as Hickory, since they are the same species? I've turned Hick'ry, but never Peecan.

I've never turned it green. The few pieces I have turned were from the same downed tree (and had sat for quite a while) so I can't claim to have turned a lot anyway. It may have been a tad dense but nothing like some Aussie burls I've turned (Mallee=Granite). I would rate Cherry as much harder than Pecan based on my limited experience.

Haven't turned Hickory yet so I can't compare.

Thanks guys. John, like Neal said, I don't know if I'd rate it as "hard"....just a very tight, dense grain.

Beautiful Travis. You didn't happen to use your corererer to make that lip-in-a-lip did ya?

Nope Ernie, used my trusty 1/2" bowl gouge and a 1/4" skewchy gouge for the fine tuning. ;)

Nice bowl, Travis. I don't guess I've seen a double rim done like that before. Nice touch!
