The first one is my first successful natural edge bowl. I lost some of the bark while turning so I just stripped it off. It's about 9"x5"
The second is just a small candy dish. I was just kind of playing with the shape on it. Still on the fence about that shape though. It's about 5.25"x2". This will be a gift for a friend who collects candy dishes.
Any and all comments/critiques welcome.

Kevin, I like both of these bowls. The thing I like the most about the small bowl is the form. Very nice wood.:)

Nice bowls Kevin. I'm partial to the NE, but like them both. That's a great looking finish. What did you use?

Thanks everyone.
Ernie, the NE is watco danish oil and shellac followed by a beall buff. The small one is just watco and buffed.

Nicely done Kevin. I did a form like your smaller bowl too, and I wasn't too crazy about it...but it led to me starting to flare the lip more in subsequent pieces. Yours looks good though.

Two very nice bowls! Beautiful wood! For some reason the candy dish really stands out for me - love the color!

Kevin,

Beautiful job! On the wavy form, I think maybe if the waves were accentuated a bit more, and you put a small foot on it to give the bottom just a little lift so the bottom cuves allow your eye to travel to the center at the bottom, it might look more pleasing than it already does. The natural edge is perfect in my opinion. The finish you have attained is very nice! It makes me want to learn more about Beall buffing.

Kevin, those are very nice bowls. Here is a tip for holding the bark on mesquite -- use a fine tip applicator on thin CA and apply it along the cambium layer and also into the bark when the wall thickness gets to about one-half inch. Allow more time than you think necessary before you start turning again or you will find yourself wound up in a spider web of sticky CA.

ps - for a beautiful finish on mesquite, try pure tung oil.

Good work with both of them, Kevin. Ditto what Bill said about the CA. Also, when the bark comes off accidentally, another alternative is to use a torch (low flame setting) and make repeated light passes along the edge until you get a nice contrast. It gives it the kind of earthy look that goes well with NEs. Here's a pic of what I'm talking about.
