View Full Version : LN 140 -- Veritas alternative?

Have about decided to use a Christmas gift certificate for a LN 140.

This review http://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5562 points out some negatives of this plane, but Alf's main concerns seem to be as a general purpose skew plane. Having just fielded my first raised panels with bench planes, I'm sold on this plane for that purpose (as many of you advised when I asked about that process here), and am willing to live with the negatives mentioned in this review.

However, in the discussion, someone asked "Do you know if Veritas got plans to manufacture one of these types?", to which Rob Lee replied "....of course..... but different..."

Anyone (Rob?) know the status of that? The only candidate I know of in the last 18 months is the trim plane, which is a small skew plane, but not a 140 substitute for my purpose.

IIRC, Rob has stated that they will make a variation on the Stanley 289. Not quite the same thing, but might be what he is talking about.

I have no idea when it might be done though.

Hi Alex,

I have both left and right Lie-Nielsen 140's and I reckon they are great little planes.

In terms of Veritas/Lee Valley, I believe they are working on an improved version of the Stanley 289 but it is not out yet. Patrick Leach's Blood & Gore gives a rundown of the Stanley 289 (http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan14.htm#num289). The 289 is a bit different to a 140 but it has a skewed blade. Rob Lee has said of the Veritas version "think 289, but with improvements, and handed...." (Go to the WoodCentral chatroom and click on Rob Lee under the heading of "Guest Chat Archive") I don't know when the Veritas 289 is due to be released.
