Could anyone tell me the best place, the closer, the better, to purchase rough oak lumber at a good price? I live in Plains KS (SW corner). I figured it would save me alot to pick the wood up myself instead of paying the high price shipping but with the price of gas I really hope someone proves me wrong!

Thanks,
Chad

Chad.
I can't say that "mail order wood" would be any cheaper, but there could be a big difference in quality.
I ordered quite a bit of cocobola last fall. The cost was about break even, when I subtracted gas, and taxes. Luckily all of mine was short enough that it could be shipped UPS ground.
The quality though, was in another category. Much better than anything I could source locally. I've bought some nice wood local too. The cost per bd/ft was less mail ordered.
Give CurlyWood a call. Mike Mastin, the owner, is a member of Sawmill Creek.

Chad, there is a mill http://www.johnsonsawmill.com/ourproducts.html in Oklahoma not that far from SW Kansas that has good lumber. This web site has prices for kiln dried stuff, it has faces touch planed and straight lined on one side. I take a trip there about once a year to stocked up on wood, they are great to work with and they have very good quality lumber. You should call ahead to make sure they have what you want in stock. The last time I was there I wanted QS white oak but they were out. You will note they also have a lot of exotic woods for reasonable prices, and they also have a good cross section of hardwood plywoods.
