Turned powder horn plugs ...

I've been making powder horns for years and turning my own plugs for them. Here is my latest project, and today I turned a spout plug, a walnut spout tip and a walnut base plug. The wood is from a walnut tree struck by lightning on the family farm that I cut up a couple years ago. I have lots of bowl blanks, too! The spout tip and base plug will be secured with wooden pegs after the horn is finished being polished. I'll make a black staple to put in the bottom plug to fasten the strap to. I'll engrave it after securing the wood and making it moisture proof. My next horn plans to have a turned antler spout tip and a cherry base plug. Thanks for looking.

I am originally from Richmond, IN and did sell several each year at Friendship, IN at either the Spring or Fall National Shoot (I tried to always get to both). I used to sell some at Hara Arena in Dayton at the big gun shows. Since moving to Richmond, VA. I've been making them as presentations and still selling a few. I do sell them as custom made and do engraving also. I've had fun making matched sets of powder horn/blowing horn, too. I've been a member of the Honourable Company of Horners for several years, and am using my wood turning skills to try to make even nicer grade horns. It's fun when you can try any design on the lathe and see what it'll look like on a horn.
