View Full Version : Maple Burl Stemmed Wine Glass and an Ambrosia Maple Bowl

I decided to give something new a try, so went to the dollar store and got a few wine glasses. I snapped the stem off and turned one out of maple burl and used walnut for the base. The walnut oil finish darkened the maple more than I would have liked. The other picture is just a simple ambrosia maple bowl that I didn't feel was deserving of its own thread. The finish on that one is walnut oil as well.

Thanks for looking.

I like the idea with the wine glass. I think it turned out nice.

Both are mighty fine looking Don but sure do like the glass. Nice work.

Great job on both! I especially like the stem on that wine glass! Very nicely done.

Don, good job on both pieces but I'm with the others so far and really like the wine glass.

How did you attach the stem to the glass?

Yet another one who likes the wine glass.

Somehow the idea of snapping off the stem gives me the willies.

I really love the look of the goblet and the bowl. Very nice!!
Do you have any pics of the stem before you attached it to the base? Did you use epoxy to glue it?

Very cool Don. I tried my hand at attaching glass to wood last year, making some bells. Very satisfying combination. Well done on the stem... "Elegant" comes to mind.

Thanks for the kind words all! The glass was my first and it's more of a prototype, so I just used some general purpose cement to attach it since I am out of epoxy. All subsequent ones I do will use a marine epoxy. I will probably use an outdoor poly over the stem as well.

Like 'em both! So you're putting that walnut you scored over the weekend to use already!

Very slick Don, the glass is awsome I agree about the oil darkening to much but that is my only concern. The bowl is nice too.

I think they're both very nicely done, though my eye keeps wandering back to the wine glass! I've seen similar done before but, haven't had the guts to try it myself yet! :o Nice job, Don. :)

Both are nice, Don. There's something about that bowl that I find very appealing.
