I am about ready to purchase a new 38" Woodmaster Drum sander. Can anyone tell me what grits seem to work best on these larger drum sanders? I am thinking 3 different grits should be enough?

I use 80 and 120 grits

Yup, me too. 80 on the first drum and 120 on the second. I've actually never tried anything else but that cleans everything up nicely for using a ros.

120 on the front, 180 on the rear. Light passes. I've got the Powermatic 2 x 25".

Thanks for the info guys. I think i will be making a trip up to Woodmaster to see the machine run. Maybe I can tell more by seeing it work and what the grits actually do. I still would love to hear what others think. Keep te replys coming.

I use 120 - 180 on my 36" Extrema. 150 ROS cleans it up nicely.

I use 120 and 180 (split half and half on either side of my Woodmaster 38"0. I have the single drum model. I have used a 180/220 combination when I am in a particularly lazy (read non sanding ) mood.

Works fine.
