Okay, I'm in a rut. This is a Maple HF, 7-1/2" tall x 4-1/2" dia. Dyed with Artisan Dye. Finished with 8 or so coats of Deft spray lacquer and buffed. Dimpled the rim with my dremal tool. Left the dye somewhat translusent so some grain shows. As always your honest thoughts are welcome and thanks for looking.

Stay in that rut Keith, it's a great rut to be in! Excellent form and very interesting job with the finish. I like it a lot.

Did you put a black finish on the inside or is that just the shadow through the opening creating that appearance?

Thanks Mark. I did not paint the inside, left it natural so the is no question that is is wood.

Rut? Don't think so. You're simply exploring and developing a particular theme. :)

Beautiful piece, Keith! Perfect form as always and I especially love the color of this one.

Keith,

How long do you wait between coats and do you sand or steel wool?

Thanx

Pete, normally the lacquer dries fast, in my shop anyway, so I typically only wait 10-15 minutes between coats. As far as sanding between coats, honestly, I don't. After the final coat I will sand with 600 grit before waxing/buffing.

I've never been one to "paint" a nice wood but, that dye job is beautiful. I really like that you left it thin enough for the grain to show through a bit. The form is magnificent as is the finish. Guess I wouldn't expect anything less from you, Keith! :)

If it showed up on my collection shelf, folks would have to fight mighty hard to even get to think about taking it off my hands. Beautiful!

Maybe the rut you are in will get you where you want to go. This is a really nice piece. The shoulder looks as if it is perfect in relationship to the overall design of the shape, and the curve works well to produce the effect of near perfection.

That's a beautiful vase you did. Man! Everybody has been busy. Fabulous pieces being shown today. Maybe someday I will be able to do that.

Nice vase. I am playing with dye lately to.

As for your rut, you have been saying you are going back to segmented stuff but it just hasn't happened. You need to just rid your shop of HF blanks ... you got my adress, right?
