I am thinking of pulling the trigger on the Triton woodrack (http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0000DEZO9.01.PT01._SS400_SCLZZZZZZZ_V63407584_.jp g) but have concerns about the support it provides for longer lumber. I don't want to buy 2 racks and was wondering if I could cut the rack in half. Yes, I realize that the storage capacity would decrease, but I don't buy a lot of lumber at once.

I share your concerns about longer boards. You may be able to "half" the units, but I'm not sure about how those fasteners that hold it to the studs are configured from the picture. You may be forced to consider two sets on 24" centers for dealing with longer stock without sagging.

That said, you can build a stong substitute with some 2x4s on edge and the heavier EMT conduit into drilled holes. If your studs are open, you can sandwitch in the rack material beside the existing studs. If the wall is closed you can use 6" lag bolts to fasten to the face.

When I was considering them I assumed I would buy two sets to handle longer stock. In the end I went with shop made as I did not have the real estate for that much vertical space. Cutting them in half might do. As Jim says it would depend on the way the verticals are designed.

I made these quickly for 4/4 and 6/4 lumber but the guy I borrowed the idea from used larger slots for up to 8/4. He stated that he has used this system off and on over many years without a failure. 3/4" (junk) ply, forstner the holes and cut the slots with a jigsaw.
