This is the cherry bowl I bounced awhile back when the tenon snapped - thanks all for advice on salvaging it. I think I'm going to have to turn more cherry. My wife really likes it. This is my 2nd bowl.
A couple firsts for me on this one. I used the Talon chuck Santa brought me (which I really like). I used General Finishes salad bowl finish since this is a snack bowl (chips, popcorn etc) for my son. 5 coats. 8" diameter, 2 3/4" deep.
I don't get to turn as often as I'd like, but it sure is fun. Hopefully my technique will improve over time. I think the next thing will be a pencil pot for my wife at work. Then I want to get into that plum wood I picked up a few weeks ago...

Wow!! Second bowl? Beautiful job! Great form, good looking cherry grain and a really nice finish - what more could you ask for?

Hoping you mean second-hand popcorn. Old maids fresh from the popper or micro can dimple up a surface finish pretty easily. I keep mine free of film finish for that reason.

Oh, well this one has salad bowl (oil) finish on it. I wonder how that will stand up...

Great save. Your finish will hold up fine if you don't leave water on it. Once in a while you'll need to add more oil, but that's the great thing about oil finishes, you can easily refresh them.

Sadly, the "salad bowl finish" from Behlen's and such are actually wiping varnishes. If you use more than a couple of coats on most domestics, you're laying down a film of varnish, vulnerable to the heat from the contents. The reason people want a wooden salad bowl is because the heat through a metal or even pottery bowl can be a bit tough on the lap.
Curing oils like tung, walnut, or linseed are extremely flexible, and with a bit of thinning on the first couple applications, you won't get a blisterable film. They will, however, slow the absorbtion and possible rancidy from non-curing oils used to prepare the corn.

All wrong. Something here is all wrong Gary. You actually tell us that this here specimen is your SECOND EVER turned bowl? What do you take us for?
Now I know who is going to give me all the bowl tips; that is an awesome effort for a hall of famer, much less a rookie. Tom likes it.
