I've been having some fun with platters lately and I ended up taking a perfectly nice piece of wood and putting a bunch of dents in it. It doesn't look as good as it did when I pictured it in my head (of course), but I'm relatively happy with the result and it was fun to do.

The diameter is just under 12" and it's a little over 1" thick.

Don,
Beautiful! You knew when to stop. Adding more would be too busy for this piece of burl. I like it.

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement all!

I'll suggest to anyone to give something like this a try. It's hard to take a nice piece and possibly destroy it with one slip-up, but the possibilities are almost endless of what can be done. I simply ground the end of an old flathead screwdriver into a rice-like shape and pounded the details with a mallet.

Brodie: Thanks! I used a coat of boiled linseed oil, two coats of danish oil, and I buffed a coat of paste wax on by hand.
