Great pen Laurie:) :) Did you somehow etch the tree or is it drawn on and sealed with something ? Inquiring minds need to know. Great job !

Laurie,
I am in the process of cutting, drilling, etc. whitetail antlers for some pens. I was wondering if scrimshaw would look too artsy for the bunch I am doing the pens for. I now know that the scrimshaw will enhance the pens greatly. Thanks for posting pics!

Thanks John, but how did they do it 200 years ago ? Okay, I will look it up myself.:)

thanks guy's,
this is etching and then inking and so on. you need to be steady and persice on the material. i use a tool the is sharp and hard. our ansestors did it with sewing needles and knives while sitting on ships for months at a time. i hope you all liked this pen. i hope to do more. yes, this is an art. scrimshaw is not known to too many people. almost a dying art. you'll fine it on most of your fishing harbors.

P.S. i hope my spelling is alright.

I must admit that when I scrimshaw, I use a high speed tool. I have sold some knives and some odd pieces of artificial ivory. People always ask the histiory of scrimshaw, I tell them it is an artform dating back to whaling days and the use of whalebone. Is this correct, Laurie?

I really like that pen. I have had quite a few antler pens laser engraved, but this is special. I especially like the way you made the scrimshaw on both barrels. Very inspirational. Thanks for posting.
