On the latest segmented bowl I'm trying Kingwood. Anyone ever use it?

Turned a pen or two sometime back. Don't remember any special problems. Pretty stuff. Good luck with it.

I have had a couple of trees and turned some pieces . When fresh it is hard and when dry if you are turning a good sized piece keep your thoughts to yourself. This is an old photo and the peice had darkened. If I were to resand it the original color will again come out. The photo does not show it but the sapwood is the same on each side and this is typical of the tree size here.

Thats a very nice peice. I'm doing a small segmented peice so I hope it works well. It'll have over 300 peices and be less 6" tall.

Bill, I've turned a lot of segmented kingwood; it's one of my favorites - great color and grain. In fact, I'm just finishing a piece which is 90% kingwood. The key to gluing this or any "oily" wood is to not delay; glue it as soon as possible after cutting it. This minimizes the time for any extractives to seep onto the end-grain gluing surface.
