I would like to build a nice outdoor table that will seat 6 to 8 adults. I envision it being either oval or rectangular. The long sides will have unattached benches and the ends will have chairs. I plan on using teak. I can't seem to find any decent plans out there, and was wondering if you all have some links that I have not found.

Thanks -- Steve

I think you will find that when you price the teak for your project that it will be less expensive to buy an already made set rather than build. In most cases, you can buy at a lot less than building. Costco, last year, had a very nice, well made, thick set for less than I could buy the wood alone. The reason is that teak lumber from SE Asia carries a high export tariff from the various producing countries. But, the same countries do not put tariffs on locally manufactured teak items. They are attempting to discourage rapid depletion of their natural teak and to encourage local employment and revenue.

There is some central americal plantation grown teak available but it is not as nice looking as forest teak.

You might want to look at some other woods. Jaboba (brazillian cherry) and Ipe are good outdoor woods that look very nice. There are also some other woods that look somewhat like teak.

HI Steve, and welcome to the creek.:)

Regarding the table, Norm built a circular table a couple years ago on New Yankee Workshop. (http://www.newyankee.com/getproduct3.cgi?1209) The table is 51" in diameter.

Thanks, Ken. Unfortunately, due to the dimensions of the deck this will go on, I do need to go with more of a rectangular design. Perhaps I can modify Norm's table.

Steve:

I think this is the one I built a few years ago. (http://www2.hometime.com/Admin/shopsite/p_7031.htm) Pretty easy, straightforward construction, and would be easily modified for length and width. I made mine out of cypress instead of Mahogany.
