View Full Version : Need electrical advise on an Italian motor

I recently purchased a used sawdust collector. It was used as a dust collector in the shoe industry and seemed to be big enough for my needs, 1 1/2 HP, 12" twelve blade impellar and a 6 inch duct.

When I got it home and wired it up (single phase 220 V) the motor would not work (just hummed), On closer inspection I discovered, I think, that it has a three phase motor. The label is worn but I believe the information is as follows:

Motore ASINCRONO TRIFASE
TIPO 80
GIRL al 1' 3300
HP 1.5
V 220 380
Hz 60
A 4.6 2.7
Servizio S1

Does this translate into 3 phase 60 Hz 220 volt 1.5 HO 3300 rpm motor?

If so, do I have any options to make it run on my small a single phase 220 circuit in the garage or should I just consider it a sunk cost?

looks like a 3 phase motor from amperage rating. use a 3 phase static phase converter and you will be all set, or swap out the motor. The problem with swapping out the motor is that a lot of European motors are face mounted as opposed to US motors that often are foot mounted ( exception is the c face series of motors )

The last word is the clue... ;)

Yup. Three phase.

Don't think I'll swap motors as I'd probably end up with more problems, unless of course I get really luckly and trip over the right motor.

Lou, is a "3 phase static phase converter" expensive or difficult to install? To put my question in perspective, I'm comfortable with house wiring, basic 220 and setting up sub panels but know nothing about phase stuff.

here is a link to one of the main producers of static converters and they will have all the info you need. basically it is pretty simple
