First Segmented Pens

Very nice. Do you mind describing, or, better yet, diagraming, how you did your lamentations?

I have another one in the glue-up stage. Once it's all glued up, I'll post a pitcure of it. It's really a very simple process/design. I just take a blank, and mark the length of the tube on it. I then make marks from "corner to corner" on what will be the length of the pen part. Then, I cut it diagonally along those lines, add a piece of veneer, and glue it back together. Below is a picture that should show what I'm doing. To get the multiple designs, simply turn the blank 90* and do it again.

Thanks. I think I've got to find some time to turn some more pens. You've inspired me! Of course, others have inspired me to turn some more bowls, boxes, hollow forms.... I'm beginning to think I don't have enough time for this hobby!

Very nice work! For those wanting to try it, this is called a celtic cross, and Guy forgot to tell you the secret to making it work. You need to make sure that the thickness of the veneer or inlay wood is as close as possible to the kerf of the saw blade used to make the cuts. The simple one is not as critical, but when making more than two cuts, the veneers will not line up correctly unless the amount of material removed during the cut is replaced by the same amount of material.
