I have been working on these for a very good friend of mine. His father passed away in November. As his Father was an Army veteran he was given a gun salute. My friend asked if I could make him and his brother a pen out of the spent cartridges. This is what I came up with. His Father was a life long Texan so I wanted to use a native Texas wood, mesquite. My thanks to a fellow creeker for supplying the mesquite to make the pen and the boxes.

I had their Fathers name and his birth and death dates laser engraved in the pen and in the top of the box I inlayed a Texas concho.

Really nice, Bobby. If you don't mind telling us, where did you get the conchos?

Very well done. I have a friend who just saw this and would like one done for his grandfathers. Could you let me know how you did this or how much you would charge to do one for him. Either way. Thanks!

Thanks for the comments fellows, they are greatly appreciated.

Dan, I got the conchos from (http://sdtradingco.com/index.htm). They have a good selection to choose from.

Again, thanks for the comments.

Excellent, both in execution and for what they stand for.

The more I get into this lathe work, I find I think of the person I am turning an item for and how the item finishes out due to my idle thoughts. This is a truly unique personal item that will be cherished for generations. I commend you on your talents, the thoughts behind the gifts and for sharing this with us.

Nice work and nice gesture, for sure! I especially like the way you covered the hinges. Details like that show craftsmanship.
