View Full Version : New way to fill grain...for me at least.

I have used a few methods over the years to fill grain to get a smooth finish, but the method I tried yesterday is the easiest I have found.

I tested with a piece of oak.

1. Sand to 200 grit.
2. Apply Danish Oil and sand with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper.

The 400 grit creates the right sized wood flour, which mixes with the oil and fills the voids in the wood with a perfect color match. The result is a non reflective, very smooth surface. That is as far as I have tested, but I imagine one could put a few coats of varnish on it to give it a nice deep luster.

In some parts of the country, this is called a 'gunstock' finish. It'll work with a poly/oil/terps mixture also.

Let's see if I have this straight. You sand, then apply Danish oil, then sand again while still wet? The wood creates its own filler? Then coat with poly or whatever? Sounds like something we did in high school woodshop many, many years ago.
