Our daughter likes anything with vegetables on it. She bought the tiles about a year ago, and gave them to LOML "to make something with them".
I made this tray for our daughter as a (belated) Christmas present, incorporating the tiles. It was late because the silicone caulking / sealant would not set properly; even though it was 64°F in the shop, I had to place a heating pad under the tray at the maximum temperature setting for about 5 days. The thermostat on the pad cycles off after about two hours http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif . It was those five days that made this present a little late http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowyes.gif .
Our daughter liked it very much - she had no idea what was happening, and her surprise was worth the wait http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowcool.gif .
I used some more of the sycamore from our property; used a 30+ year-old jigsaw to shape the handles (the much newer Milwaukee died for the second time in three months), then some sanding to smooth everything; construction is dovetails (on the D4), stopped dados to bury the plywood bottom, a 1-inch frame around the tiles.
The basic tray first appeared in ShopNotes v. 19 .
The finish is two coats of Target Coatings' blonde shellac, followed by 6 coats of Target's USL (lacquer, satin). Sanded to 400 grit after the shellac, and to 600 after the fifth USL coat.
Thanks for looking. Happy New Year to all!
