Very nice! I really like when I see a piece like this, that when you look at it you can't tell the size. It could be 3" or 16" diameter. To me, that says the form and balance a spot on. I like how the grain is oriented on the piece too. Great work.

That is really a beautiful hollow form.... you do the best!!!! I am curious though, where do you get the Antique oil finish??? It really brings out the grain nicely!

Jonathan, it's a Minwax product and can usually be found at the BORG or any store that carries Minwax. I've not tried it either but Travis sure makes it appealing.

Travis, the first word that came to mind when I saw this hollow form is 'clean' - really nice form, beautiful finish and great looking wood grain!

Keep up the great work!

Now to remain true to my 2007 Resolutions, I will start with you...

...So in short my resolutions are to always wear my face shield, hook up my dust collection system and oh ya, drive all you guys nuts with questions learning all I can to be the best I can. :)So, can you share the process you follow for your wonderful finishes? That is if it isn't a secret family recipe.:D Spinning minds want to know...well at least mine does.

I think the reason he's so talented is he's been practising on possum chips..... :D

Travis

That is one fine looking piece of Walnut. I really like your form. Your finish is very nice. How many coats of oil are on it?

Aw, c'mon you guys... you gotta admit this one is kinda plain lookin' compared to what we're used to seein' from down Brookhaven way....

That bein' said, it's still pretty sweet... ;)

Thanks guys.
Christopher, it's no secret. The finish will only look as good as the prep work will allow. I powersand everything up to 800 grit, then wipe on a good coat of the oil and wipe off the excess after a few minutes. Give it another coat the next day and wipe off, then buff with the Beall buffing system the following day. Easy as pie. ;) I haven't tried any of the other Antique oils other than Minwax. I get mine at Ace Hardware.

Guess I'll have to invest in that Beall system after all.:)

Travis,

As always, outstanding.

But it got me thinking. With a bowl, I start with green wood, rough turn the bowl and dry it using any number of methods.

With these hollow forms, do you start with green wood or dry? Is the process similar? Is thier a "rough" hollowing?

(Three questions down, 97 to follow!)

Thanks in advance.

Are we totally sure that Travis just hasn't perfected some method of encasing veener in a molded glass form ???:D (Or mostly solid color in the case of that ebony piece from a week or so ago...)

A truly great job and finish to make a beautiful piece Travis.

Wonderful work once again. I always look forward to see what you've got for us next...

Beautiful Piece Travis!
sometimes less is more and ya just got to let the wood do the talking!
And with this pieces you let it tell it all.
