Hey folks, I once again come to you with yet another prayer and/or well wishes request. Just got a phone call from Andy Hoyt. I don't have many details but, he was calling from his cell phone while freezing outside the door of the hospital! :( I guess it's diabetes related, following an "episode" and they're doing and/or waiting on numerous test results. With it being a Holiday weekend, he expects to be there for some time. :(

Whether it's prayers, well wishes or both, please keep Andy in mind. He's always been one of our foremost team players here at the Creek! Thanks much, gang. If I should hear anything else, I'll keep you posted.:)

Andy, my friend, you are in our prayers as well. Didn't know you were diabetic. I've had it for 40 years so I know it can be difficult. The main thing is to do what the doctor tells you to do !! (I know that can be hard for you to do). PM me if I can be of help.

Andy,

I didn't know that you were diabetic too. I've been so for 20 years now and have just begun to take better care of myself - stubborn ain't the word, so my wife says!

I've seen pics of you and you don't even seem to be overweight (like me).

Godspeed to your recovery, whatever the complication. I'll remember you in my prayers and have a good thought for you and yours.

Man....."diabetes related"......that could mean anything from hypo to hyper (a simple low or high blood glucose episode) to something VERY serious (eye problems right up to and including organ failure or gangrene leading to amputation  !).

Andy - I'm creekin' (mods - is this word ok? delete if not please!) worried.... please tell us it's one of the simpler complications! My thoughts are with you as a fellow sufferer (type 2 in reasonable control for many years).

You are so right. Things are way too normal.

I hope they have him hooked up to an IV full of dust and wood shavings so the withdrawl isn't too bad.

Somehow, I can picture Andy attempting to abbysserate all the nurses.
I'm trying not to picture Andy in a hospital gown  though I can see him

I just got off the phone with Andy. He has been through a few rough days. The diabetes is a new diagnosis and Andy is determined to take it on and do what he needs to do for the sake of his health. Today his wife and daughter are with him and he says he is doing much, much better than a few days ago.

Andy anticipates being discharged in a couple more days or so, and he is looking forward to getting back into the swing of things (pun intended). He is deeply grateful for the support that has been shown for him here. I told him that John M. started this thread and that so far there are about five pages of well wishes. I'll spare you his response.:p :p :p Suffice it to say, again, he is thankful for this bunch of folks. And BTW so am I.

John Miliunas
01-02-2007, 2:30 PM
Thanks so very much for the update, Mark! :) OK, so it's a bummer about the diagnosis, however, if I know Andy like I know Andy then, he's going to attack the whole diabetes thing like he attacks a bottle of Moxie and all will be well! :D (Probably will have to cut back on the Moxie, though. ) I'll be keeping him in my prayers throughout! :) And, I'd like to add my personal "Thanks!" to all who have been cheering him on and had him on their own prayer list! You Creekers are THE best! :)

Andy sorry to hear you are newly diagnosed but it is not the end of the world, even though it feels like it at times, I was diagnosed on the 6th November 2006 so have some idea of what you are going through now.

As they say welcome to the club no one wants to join, there is a lot of info out on the web, most of it good, to help you tame the beast a couple of good sites to start with are http://www.mendosa.com/ and some very good advice for us newbies can be found on http://jennifer.flyingrat.net/

Also the support of good friends is the most important thing and I know you will get plenty of that here at the creek.

Andy,

If you read this, and I bet you don't miss any of it, know that you can lead a normal life. I was diagnosed 6 yrs. ago, was almost put in the hospital with a 600 reading. I was determined to beat it. I weighed every gram of food I ate for 3 months to find out what affected me and what didn't. I changed my diet to strict vegetarian, continue to watch what I eat and excersize more. It took me 18 months, but I'm off all medication with no restrictions on what I eat. I go back to have tests done every 6 months. I've been in the normal range for 4 1/2 yrs. with no drugs. I've become a great cook, love what I eat and stay very active with outdoor activities.

You can do it too.

John

Hope you're feeling better.

The devil that sat on my shoulder and got me started turning was diagnosed with diabetes over a year ago. He had a heart attack and became aware of the diabetes at the time. He had the attack on a Monday and we went to the Totally Turning symposium on Friday. He has his diabetes well under control and he is doing fine.

Now this a is a great way to start a new year, having you home with the family and us having you here with us. Amazing when you think that so few of us have really met one another, yet are all friends and more. So glad to see you retained the curmudgeon gene, had us worried for a bit.

...First wise crack about tofu bowls and bean sprout hollow forms gets banned for life. Now, you know we'd never do that to you, but we do need to put you on a strict diet. Let's see, a regular intake of Spalted Hickory and maple burl chased with a moderate amount of Moxie, to make sure you get your vitamin needs fulfilled we prescribe some green ash, long leaf pine and Buckeye. A generous helping of segmented pecan and walnut for desert. If you're real good you can top it with some cherry. Finish things off with a bit more Moxie and if you stay on track you may even get a small scoop of special rainbow ice cream (sugarless) in your favorite Creek produced bowl. We'll look out for ya! :D :) Glad your back!! Now, get to work and get this place straightened up again!!

Andy, don't completely rule out Tofu and bean sprouts, Tofu is not too bad mixed in with some stirfry and sprouts can be a nice addition to a ham or turkey sandwich...and their good for you too.

Once again - Creekers to the rescue. And once again, I'm ever grateful for that. So. What's up with Andy? Fair question, so here goes.

I've been home for two weeks now and physically, I feel fine. My feet hurt less now than they have in a long time and this is a huge improvement. But I'm having a hard time concentrating on stuff which explains why I've not been pounding out a whole lot of so-called "value added content" for the creek on my keyboard. The docs at the VA say this will clear up in another week or so; and I have my fingers crossed. Every day does seem to be better than the last one, though.

Equally bad is that since this happened I've not consumed a single cookie, one scrumpdillicious potato chip, one heavenly spoonful of ice cream, nor one sip of Moxie (the original nectar of the gods). This lack of Mental Health Food undoubtedly explains why I can't focus on stuff for more than a few minutes. Might also have something to do with the new holes I had to punch in my belt!

But I am reading and keeping current. I see a number of new names (Addy, Wyko, Randall, Nelms, some Tibbetts guy, and many more) and wish to collectively welcome all of you. There has been lots of great stuff posted lately and while it's great fun to look at it all, it also hurts a bit because it reminds me that I haven't danced with Janine since Christmas Eve.

I've had a lot of PMs, emails, and phone calls from many of you; and I cannot properly express how meaningful that has been. Prior to typing this message, I just re-read this thread from the beginning. It choked me up to do so when I got home from the hostible and just has again. Suffice it to say, that once more, the Creek has transformed me.

Thanks ever so much. Andy

I'm sorry...you misspelled a word. It's "horsepittle". Glad I could help.;)

If it makes you feel any better, Andy, my lips have never touched Moxie, but that's because I had never heard of it until you were around, and I've never seen it locally. I did do an I-net search and I could possibly get somewhere not too far, albeit inconveniently.

So, raising a (virtual) glass of Moxie to your mental fog clearing and to your improved and continually improving health!

I understand why you would say this is "bad" Andy, but as "your chaplain" I also want to lift up what is "good" about this. By doing without these things for this amount of time you have proven beyond all doubt that you CAN do without them. That takes stones (the good kind) to do. The focus will come. This is your new way of life and it will be a great one as long as you have made up your mind that it will be.

I can empathize, as you know. I've been out of comission for what will be two weeks tomorrow and it sucks. For you it's been almost twice that, but, the good news is that there is light at the end of the tunnel for us both. The worst has come and gone and we are still here, and we are going to get better.

Hang in there!

Mr. Andrew Hoyt...
You believe what you want...but I believe that YOU "transformed" the Creek (and a few people directly I might add) much more than it has transformed you. Of course I won't accept your usual challenge to a Moxie float drink off...cuz I'd whoop your tired butt fur sure! Well...that's if it is of the diet kind off course.
