I've never done anything as fragile or with as large a void as this, so I wanted to ask for advice on sanding it without destroying it. Despite my best efforts, there's a little bit of tearout around the especially punky areas, but I'm afraid to sand it while it's spinning. Would I be better off to just sand it by hand/random orbital off the lathe when I'm done?

Thanks for looking!

Hand sanding is definitely indicated on this piece...which is beautiful, by the way.

Wow...that is too cool.

Me personally? I've already been snagged by a jagged edge while sanding. Got blood all over the piece...then I had to sand THAT out!

Something as cool as that platter deserves the "sanding in the lap" treatment anyway. ;)

Great looking piece! Yup, as much as I hate hand-sanding, that's what I would do.

Beautiful work Don! Looks like you don't have a lot of options when it comes to sanding - enjoy!!!

Awsome wood Don.!!! Just watch those jagged edges. They can draw blood faster than you can blink an eye. DAMHIKT!!! :o ;)

Real nice piece Don. But you can't eat anything much that's runny on it. Unless you wear an apron:)

Awsome wood Don, looks like a candidate for hand sanding to me.

That's going to look great Don... already does. I'd put some hardener on it first so the punky doesn't crumble out under the sand paper. On something like this I like power sanding on the lathe, but with the lathe off and controlling the spin by hand. It just helps with the holding and helps to keep the sanding uniform.

Thanks for the advice and kind words all.

Ernie, great idea. I'll give that a shot.

Jim, no biggie. I usually need to wear one anyway! :D

I finally had some time to finish up this piece. Hand sanded to 320 with two coats of Danish Oil.

Nice Don. It really turned out darker than I thought it would. I really like that piece and it raw edge.

I like it! The missing piece and the darkness make me feel like I'm looking at an ancient relic. Very cool!
