Hi David,

I really like my uncle's DeWalt. It is worlds nicer than the Craftsman it replaced and the small old style dremel that I have.

I think it depends on how much time you intend on spending on it. The prices jump considerably after the DeWalt. I think the best solution is to try out as many as you can before buying so you have a feel for what you like and do not like.

I would not buy a saw that needed the pinned blades.

I have an RBI Hawk 20 inch and I think it is a good saw also. You can check them out here http://www.rbiwoodtools.com/. I like them being made in the USA.

I have the 20" DeWalt, and I really like it. It replaced an AMT which was the PITS to change blades on. The DeWalt is easy, and with the right blades, it cuts like a hot knife through butter.

If I was going to buy a new one it would be the Delta 20, I have heard very good things from the guys that own and use them alot. The Dewalt is a good priced machine but guys that do al ton of scrolling have had problems with motors etc. on the machine. Go to http://www.scrollsaws.com and contact the owner Rick, he will give you advise as he has done some R &D work for different compainies and owns more scrollsaws than you can imagine.

I started out with a ($230?) Dremel scroll saw. It was okay...ish, but left a lot to be desired.

After seeing and trying the Hawk and Hegner offerings at one of The Wood Working Shows, I decided to sell the Dremel and go with a Hawk 26" model (http://www.rbiwoodtools.com/scrollsaws.html), and have not looked back since.

Yes, it costs a lot more than the DeWalt/Delta/etc. models, but IMO, it's well worth the extra - so much smoother, easier to control cuts accurately etc.

I have also used DeWalt scroll saws on a few occasions (at The Sawdust Shop in Sunnyvale, CA) and have been impressed how good they are considering their price - easy blade change, easy tension adjust, lowish vibration and fairly smooth cuts. My only criticism would be the blade cutout in the table seems excessively large, thus the work was not as well supported as it could be.

Just my 2 cents....

I have had my DeWalt 20" for about a year and love it. I would also recommend the Flying Dutchman blades from mikesworkshop.com
