After lots of research I have decided to replace the 3hp 3ph motor with a 3hp single phase motor.Found a new motor from a dealer in Tomah WI for about $300.00 with shipping. Been loking at phase converters, rotary and static and also at vfd's but decided to bite the bullet and go with the new motor. So far, with the new motor I have $680.00 invested and all I need is a better fence system. The shop addition will start soon after the first of the year And then I will do all insulation and interior work myself so it will be a while before I do restoration on the saw. Thanks for listening.

Sweet project David.

I've been very pleased with my VEGA fence over the years; but you cna't go wrong with a Beis either!

Keep up updated as you bring this tool back into the mainstream.

Wow! That's service. It takes longer to get a letter from San Fran to L.A. than to get mail from the east coast around here.

How about a name and phone number or web address for that motor dealer. I have an 18" powermatic planer with a 3ph 7 1/2 hp motor that I want to try to convert to single phase.

Also, advice from anyone that has done this type swap would be appreciated. Will a 7 1/2 hp single phase deliver the same power as a 7 1/2 hp 3ph?

Yes, but...

1. Single phase motors over 5 hp are rare and probably expensive.
2. You'll need much heavier wiring, since the same current will be coming over 2 wires instead of 3.

I think 5 hp would probably be fine for that planer. My Oliver 399 only has 3 hp, and it runs very well. Of course, it's direct drive, so it doesn't have the extra belt loss yours will have, but still 5 hp should be enough for you.

Making a phase converter from a used 10 hp 3-phase motor might be your cheapest option.

Next time in need of a motor, check your local electrical repair shop. Bargains galore to be found. That is if, the motor does not have to be new!

The problem with a unisaw is that it uses a proprietry motor. It has a special mounting system. An off the shelf motor will not fit.

It's not clear that you need 7 1/2 HP for the planer. These planers were designed to be able to take large cuts on wide stock. I doubt that you would need more than 5HP unless you are a lumber yard surfacing thousands of board feet a day. Just something to consider.

I noticed someone on eBay selling laser-cut brackets you weld to a non-Unisaw motor and woila--it fits a Unisaw.
