I hope everyone had a safe holiday.

Here are a few pictures of a christmas gift I made for our sister-in-law for her log cabin. After many years of trading gloves and wine and other such things we implemented a rule that our gifts must be self-made which has really added to the fun. Back in October I asked her for ideas and she said she would like a shelf to display the mugs she receives annually from her children with her grandchildren's pictures, she was suprised.

The construction is loose tenon, mainly 6/4 pine all milled from one of several timbers I bought at an estate sale, I have no idea how old it is. The door is 3/4 with 1/8" panes, the back is a 1/4" mirror.

I have built very little with pine and became quite frustrated by the softness. I swear I couldn't get within 10' of these parts without denting them. And if that wasn't frustrating enough I'm still cleaning pitch from the bandsaw blade that I did all the resawing on and my table saw too. I have several more timbers and large (2"x18"x10') boards and we both have cabins that fit well with pine furniture so I guess I better get good at cleaning pitch.

Pine definitely has its place! I like your display case very much. The mirror back is very attractive, too--a feature I have used myself. I couldn't tell from the pictures whether the interior shelves were adjustable or fixed. And what finish did you use?

Steve - The mirror was my wifes idea, I was going to shiplap 1/4" pine. The mirror worked out pretty good it adds a lot of depth. The finish is Shallac thinned 1:1 followed by Brtley's Gel stain topped with Watco wipe on satin poly. The Shellac pretty much stops the "blotchies", I don't think I'll stain anything else without using it first.
