Cutting stopped dados with hand tools

I'm new to the forum. Been watching for awhile, but this is my first post. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to cut stopped dados/stopped grooves with hand tools? I know how to do it with a router, but I really dislike power tools. Any help would be appreciated.

Drill a series of blind holes along the groove approaching the stop, plane up to them, then clean out where the plane won't reach using a chisel.
